Facebook will use publisher consensus as metric for ‘non-fake’ news

In the light of intense criticism over Facebook’s propensity to popularise ‘fake news’ – seen by many as a contributory factor to the outcome of the recent U.S. election – the social network has announced that it will soon begin to consider broad interest from major publishers as a critical index of whether a news story is valid or not – and whether it rises to the top in users’ feeds.

Will Cathcart, Facebook’s VP of Product Management, has posted that those all-important stories ‘bubbling up’ to the top of news will henceforth also contain an indication of where the story linked to was published – a practice that Google News has always adhered to; but most importantly, that stories which receive wide coverage among a locus of major news outlets will be favoured.
